The Democrats’ level of what psychologists call “Disowning Projection” has lately moved from “Well, this is kind of interesting” to “Oh my God, it’s embedded in EVERY SINGLE THING they say.”
For those who don’t know this term it essentially means accusing others of what you, yourself, are guilty of.
The most obvious recent example is “Trump is going to destroy democracy,” from the political party which just disavowed the will of the people and installed a candidate of their choice into the role with nary an inch of approval from the voters.
It’s supposed to be about the voters.
That’s not the only glaring example. “Trump is going to restrict your freedom,” from the party which just spearheaded a massive authoritarian attempt at removing your rights under the guise of a medical “emergency.” I’m not sure a disease with a .3% death rate should qualify as a pandemic. Yes, it did spread rapidly, but the only people still getting Covid are the ones who get the “booster” shots, which apparently decimate natural immunity. Also, a .3% death rate is basically the same level of killing as a strong breeze. When you’re already very sick, a breeze really can kill you.
Calling Trump bad for democracy from the party which rigged its primaries to stop RFK Jr., Cornell West and Marianne Williamson, feels at the least ironic, if not disowning. Say what you will about Trump (and there is plenty to say), but he did at least win actual non-rigged primary elections.
Calling Trump “an existential threat to the future of humanity,” from the party which is needling Russia into World War III and mouthing support for a terrorist organization instead of our most reliable ally in the Middle East feels like a great example of disowning projection to me.
It’s all about the will of the people, not just a few people, all of the people.
