Used Car Dealerships Are Selling Roving Meth Labs

I just bought a used car from a dealership. It smelled OK, but upon driving it home (one and one half hour drive) I got sick. Severe headache (I never get them), sneezing, racing heart bordering on irregular heartbeat. It was a smoked-in car and I was not told.

They are not obligated to inform you and the industry considers what is now called third hand smoke, a “cosmetic” problem. Third hand smoke is “smoke” embedded in surfaces, cannot be gotten out, and it is just as hazardous as second hand “real” smoke.

It is not cosmetic. It is actually health- and life-threatening.

You might say, “Just get it cleaned up and keep driving it.” It is impossible to clean because the chemicals stay – absorbed into the leather, the overhead cloth – everything even if you cannot see stains or a yellowed cabin filter. When you move around in your car you release these chemicals and breathe them or absorb them through your skin. I literally have a car I can never drive.

I will document the hazards below and since I got it from AI (Sigh), I apologize. I just started looking up the scientific journal article to back this up: 47 and counting.

Tobacco Specific Nitrosamides

Details: While some TSNAs are deposited directly from the smoke, third-hand smoke undergoes a dangerous chemical transformation inside cars. Nicotine heavily coats the leather, plastic, and fabrics. Over time, this surface nicotine reacts with ambient nitrous acid (a common airborne pollutant found in vehicle cabins) to continuously create new, highly potent TSNAs (like NNK) directly on the car surfaces.

DAMAGE TO THE BODY

DNA Damage and Mutations: Once absorbed, enzymes in the liver convert nitrosamines into reactive chemicals. These compounds bind to DNA and form damaging adducts that cause genetic mutations.

Oxidative Stress: TSNAs  trigger the creation of reactive oxygen species that harm cellular lipids, proteins, and DNA strands.

Cancer Risk: Long-term exposure to high levels is linked to a higher risk of tumors in organs like the liver, stomach, esophagus, and bladder. Regulatory groups classify many nitrosamines as probable human carcinogens.

But NNK definitely causes cancer in humans. It is a highly potent, tobacco-specific chemical classified as a Group 1 human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Heavy Metals and Radioactive Elements (!!!)

This bothered me the most. It takes a hazmat team to remove these. There is no car cleaning company that could do that. They are “permanently trapped until physically extracted”.

Details: Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, arsenic, and nickel, alongside radioactive elements like polonium-210, do not evaporate or degrade. They settle into the fibers of the seats, floor mats, and the vehicle’s dust. Normal passenger movement constantly shifts the fabric, resuspending these toxic metal particles back into the cabin air where they can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

DAMAGE TO THE BODY

Digestive distress: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Physical weakness: General fatigue, muscle weakness, chills, and shortness of breath.

Neurological signs: Headaches, dizziness, and tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.

Kidneys and liver: Metals accumulate in filtering organs, potentially leading to renal failure, liver damage, and impaired metabolic function.

Cardiovascular system: High levels are linked to high blood pressure (hypertension) and irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias).

Cancer risk: Toxic metals like arsenic and cadmium are classified as carcinogenic, increasing the risk of lung, skin, and kidney cancers.

DAMAGE FROM POLONIUM

Polonium-210 causes severe cellular destruction and acute radiation sickness (ARS) when it enters the body through swallowing, breathing, or open wounds. It comes from insecticides used on tobacco.

Primary Damage and Symptoms

Bone Marrow & Blood: It destroys fast-growing blood cells, causing a sharp drop in white blood cells (lymphopenia), severe anemia, internal bleeding, and immune system collapse. Over time, low doses could result in leukemia.

Gastrointestinal Tract: High doses damage the gut lining, leading to severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and toxic shock.

Liver and Kidneys: Organ failure follows rapidly, frequently causing jaundice and severe headaches.

Hair Follicles: Rapid cell death causes widespread hair loss (alopecia).

But don’t worry as long as you never move around on the seat you won’t breathe it in.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHS)

Benzoapyrene is a PAH found in third-hand smoke.

DAMAGE TO THE BODY BY BENZOAPYRENE

Cytochrome P450 enzymes in organs like the liver try to break down the chemical to flush it out, but this process accidentally creates a toxic, reactive intermediate instead.

DNA Adducts form when this reactive chemical binds directly to your cellular DNA, creating permanent genetic errors if cells fail to repair the damage properly.

Group 1 Carcinogen status is assigned to this chemical because it actively causes cancer, particularly in the lungs, skin, and bladder.

Immune System function can be suppressed by chronic exposure, making the body less effective at fighting off illnesses.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Status: Slowly off-gasses into the air.

Details: Gases like formaldehyde and benzene initially remain trapped inside soft materials like seat foam and carpets. Over time, they slowly “off-gas,” re-entering the cabin air as a gas. This is why a smoker’s car maintains a distinct, stale odor even after being aired out—the surfaces act as a constant reservoir releasing these gases back into the space.

BENZENE IS FOUND IN HOUSES THAT WERE METH LABS.

DAMAGE

Organ damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system

Increased cancer risk, as certain specific VOCs (like benzene and formaldehyde) are known or suspected human carcinogens

Worsened respiratory conditions, aggravating symptoms for people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Why is it legal to sell a customer something that would cause irreparable harm?  Aren’t you responsible for fooling them? They fooled me by masking the smell.

We need to confront the used car industry and hold them accountable for the harm they have done and continue to do. Each dealership should be sued by each and every customer they sold a smoked-in car to. What kind of negligence is this? Attempted murder for profit?

Why can a house be condemned but a car can’t. You can’t live in a meth house and you can’t drive a meth car.

The manager at the dealership gaslighted me: It’s just you, old lady.

WE NEED TO CHANGE THE LAWS AND QUIT PROTECTING DEALERSHIPS BY ALLOWING THEM TO REDEFINE CIGARETTE SMOKE AS COSMETIC THUS PROTECTING THEM FROM DISCLOSING A DRASTIC DANGER TO THE BUYER.

LET’S FLIP IT FROM BUYER BEWARE TO DEALERSHIP BEWARE OF CUSTOMERS WHO ARE NOT STUPID. YEAH, BEWARE OF NOT-STUPID OLD LADIES.
