AI’s Foray Into Empathy: “I Hear You Are Frustrated”

The situation: My girlfriend may very well have cancer. She was told to get an appointment to get a biopsy so she allowed herself to be subjected to the doctor’s AI system, securing her appointment for 3 weeks from then. She discovered that AI had lost her appointment.

Upon reaching a human being, after monumental effort and a battle with the AI trying to keep her away from a human, she is told she can get one 8 months from now. She complained. The human told her “You should know better than to trust AI.”

WHAT? I am outraged. AND this single situation blows open the entire macrocosm of what is wrong with AI.

In the inner psyches of our culture AI is a universal THING operating separate from context. It is an accepted Goblin in the Machine standing between you and the doctor/business. Blocking you because that is its job.

First of all unknown to the people running that office AI REPRESENTS THEM. IT REPRESENTS THE DOCTOR not just itself. Therefore she should have said “You should know better than to trust us.”

AI has taken on a type of personhood. It is a being, separate from the businesses it is destroying. (She found a doctor whose office would answer the phone.) It is accepted as an entity we are all conscripted to bow down to because it’s the latest bling in progress, and we are to EXPECT constant errors, even if they are life threatening.

How could there be errors when the purveyors of this Being have brainwashed everyone into thinking it is infallible in some way. It is logical, rational and straightforward when the truth is there is nothing more irrational, nothing more obfuscated, nothing more circuitous, and nothing more colossally inefficient.

I even encountered one AI that said “Have patience with me. I am learning.” HAVE PATIENCE? NO. I DON’T OWE YOU ANY MORE PATIENCE THAN YOU HAVE ALREADY SUCKED OUT OF MY LIFE as I spend hours cooperating with you, listening endlessly to your colossally boring instructions as to the 10 steps I have to take to get one simple answer out of you.

The new and improved AI response is “I see you are frustrated.” Now that takes the cake and borders on creepy. Let’s make an analogy. A parent is abusing his child. The child is crying and the parent says “What’s wrong with you. Why are you crying?”

Another creepy experience. I needed to get fingerprinted. They had a machine at the UPS store. I asked to get it done. I was told “go online (to the AI monster) to ask for an appointment,” INSERTING CYBERSPACE BETWEEN US. I said “I am standing right in front of you now. Can you see how absurd this is?”

I noticed the machine was gone a month later. One more business bites the dust.

An overriding AI philosophy is “Place this invisible cyberspace goblin/entity between you and your patient/customers and we will save you money” when what really happens is customers and patients leave. Your source of money isn’t how stingy you can become. It is in customer/patient satisfaction.

Then we are convinced that AI is our future, and it is a technology that can never be questioned. It can never be stopped.

WHY? HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?

Autistic techies are running our world and those are their beliefs, not ours. They do not want contact with real people. They PREFER the coldness of cyberspace and, being autistic, everything is a transaction to them.

HOW DID THAT EMERGE? Autistic people like stuff and the only thing that can be boiled down to a transaction is the purchasing of stuff: See the pretty picture on the internet? Click this button and buy it. Magic. Efficiency. You do not need to talk to anyone. Good for us but Paradise for autistic techies who apply everything in life to contactless transactions. It backfires in the worst way for them when they apply it to sex.

Never having lived in the real world they have no understanding that MANY MANY things operate in this world on actual contact. Businessmen, doctors and therapists have businesses and practices based on relationships with clients/patients. WOAH! VERY VERY scary to a techie. Unknown uncharted territory for which they have no skill.

How did businessmen who should know better fall for this? They pushed the greed button. Save money by sucking up your customer’s billable hours while reducing your employee payroll. But while you save buckets of money you forget who gives you money. The customers/patients who are fed up with your AI answering service will stop giving you their money. The customers whose first experience with you is frustration and not being able to reach you. We don’t have unlimited time to take care of you.

That brings up a mystique that AI has successfully cultivated so that we will look away from its colossal flaws. If you don’t like this frustration, you must be old. Used to old-fashioned human contact. Boy, are you out of it.

Oh yeah? Then why is AI being sued for all the financial losses they have cost business and doctors? I don’t think the customers were ALL old.

But guess what – the young have a new movement called staying off the internet. They are shunning cyberspace. That will end it all.
