As tends to happen in autocratic countries, America is now, clearly, in a Government versus the People situation. I wish it weren’t so, but it is. The state is now, almost routinely, just killing people. Killing people in boats in the Caribbean, killing American citizens legally protesting evil, killing the few brown people whom they aren’t disappearing, and they have no plans to stop, despite its being not only morally wrong but politically stupid, too.
I still believe we can turn this around, as a country but damn it, we have to do it now and do it seriously. FINALLY, a few courageous Republicans are beginning to turn away from the madman in the White House. Now is the time for other principled conservatives to put country over party, to put basic morality over fear, to put people first before all of the things we’ve loved about America are gone…and that is their plan.
It follows the basic Star Wars plotline. Take over a thriving democracy by scaring people and making up wars, elevating real or fake bad guys and accruing power, to the sounds of thunderously frightened applause.
Just forget the MAGA base. They’re far too brainwashed to see reality anymore. But the internet or the media, writ large, makes it seem like the majority of the Trump voters are Fascists, but that’s simply not true. We forget that Vice President Harris ran a lifeless campaign where she appeared simply not ready, simply unprepared for the moment. Trump had many voters who just wanted lower prices, but still don’t like the man. They just wanted cheaper stuff. And, since the stuff isn’t cheaper, they have turned away. Now is the moment to throw democracy a lifeline, because it’s worth saving.
